| Tested Internet Browsers to UseYour "Internet Browser" is the program you use to access the Internet. For Windows users, the most common one is Library pages have been tested for viewing with:
WARNING: at this time, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 does NOT work completely with Electronic Reserves and some other campus programs at this time. If you are using another version of these browsers, OR A VERSION OF THESE GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (which may have been altered/limited), or another browser, you may not be able to access all the services. Most of these are a free download from the sites linked.
| Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDF FilesFor viewing PDF files online or in Electronic Reserves, you will need
| How to Access the Research Databases from Off-CampusYou access the Boreham Library home page, or Research Databases directly, or by going through LionsLink.
Remember that if you spend a long enough time on the same page, you may be required to logon again. Just repeat the same process above. Remember - you must be registered THIS SEMESTER and the semester must have ALREADY BEGUN to use these resources!
How to Access the Electronic Reserves from Off-CampusYou can access the Boreham Library catalog page from the Library home page, or directly. Either way will work. Going through LionsLink is not required for Electronic Reserves.
Remember - you must be registered THIS SEMESTER and the semester must have already begun to use these resources!
How to Access the NetLibrary EBooksRemember: you must go connect to NetLibrary through the Boreham Library web site or the link in the Online Catalog record to allow NetLibrary to recognize you as a UA Fort Smith user. The "Your Library" box should say University of Arkansas - Fort Smith directly above the Amigos Library Services logo - if not, go through the Boreham Library web site or the Online Catalog record link again. If you do not "check out" the book, you can browse but not print. Someone else can check it out and then you will be blocked from using it until they are done. Some of the added features available will not function with a book until you check it out. Unlike the Research Databases and other services, NetLibrary does not have any pre-existing account information for you until you create your own account.
Please note: the Boreham Library has purchased reading rights to a number of titles, but not all the titles offered by NetLibrary. Some titles may not be available. You may suggest that the Library consider purchasing ebook versions of any titles offered by NetLibrary which are not yet owned. To read an ebook from NetLibrary: go to the Library home page and click on NetLibrary Please check in an ebook (using the button on the toolbar) if you finish using it before the time is up so that others may use it; only one person is allowed to check it out at a time. Remember:The NetLibrary ebooks allow you to "check out" an ebook to read on the computer for up to 24 hours. You must set up an account to check out a book. NetLibrary is a separate company and does not have any name or password information about you until you create an account. Only your name, country and email address are required information. You do not have to use the same name and password as on campus
BUT only you can remember this information; the University has no record of it. Remember - you must be registered THIS SEMESTER and the semester must have already begun to use these resources!
WebCTPlease note that Library staff are not normally trained for WebCT and do not normally have access to WebCT functions. While not part of the Boreham Library services, you may access WebCT courses at http://creative.uafortsmith.edu The following WebCT instructions are NOT from this University, so may vary somewhat from our version: Student Instructions for Using the Student Presentation Tool how to create a web page in WebCT
Faculty Web PagesYour instructor will provide the URL (link) to the appropriate web site for your class.
Boreham Library CD-ROMThe Library Software CD-ROM is available for checkout by currently registered students at the Library circulation desk. It contains the versions of the software needed to access the Boreham Library online services. However, you must already have an Internet Service Provider arrangement (for example: Alltel, Cox, AOL, or one of the many other services). Warning: Many ISPs provide a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer when you sign up. This version may not be fully functional, and may not be able to use all of the library's services. You may download a complete version of this from Microsoft, but this will be a large file and may take more than two hours over a telephone (dial-up) connection. OR - you can use the Firefox browser on the Library Software CD-ROM. Instructions for installing the software on a Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP system computer with a CD-ROM drive are included in the case or available online by clicking here. The browser you install may or may not be able to dial your computer's ISP (Internet Service Provider), depending on how your ISP's original software configured your computer. If it can't connect:
Your new browser should now be able to use the existing phone connection to access the Internet.
Macintosh UsersThe Boreham Library regrets that there is, at present, no way for library staff to test access via Macintosh software. We suggest you try the Mac version of Firefox 2.0.0.1 or later (also remember to get Java for your Mac), or the highest 4.x or 7.x version of Netscape available, and follow the other relevant instructions here.
Using Your Own Computer On CampusThe University of Arkansas - Fort Smith does not have open wireless access for the public. However, student and faculty wireless access to the system while on campus in certain buildings may be obtained through the Computer Help Desk's wireless information page. To get wireless access, you must:
Wireless Setup explains the latest information on setting up your own wireless connection. The Library is not capable of arranging this for you. However, once you have access, you may use your own laptop over the library's wireless network while inside the building.
