Tested Internet Browsers to Use

Your "Internet Browser" is the program you use to access the Internet. For Windows users, the most common one is Internet Explorer, but there is an alternative.

Library pages have been tested for viewing with:

Get Firefox browser icon (version 3.x or later)
(also available (older version) on the Library Software CD-ROM).
Remember to also get the Java plugin and install it - instructions are shown.
get Internet Explorer icon MS Internet Explorer 7 (7.0.5730.11 or later) or version 8 (note: version 8 may not work with all campus services yet).

If you are using another version of these browsers, OR A VERSION OF THESE GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (which may have been customized for them), or another browser, you may not be able to access all the services. Most of these are a free download from the sites linked. or you can check out the Library Software CD-ROM with tested software to install on your computer.
How to check your browser version.

Microsoft Internet Explorer users ALERT!
Microsoft is known to issue patches and upgrades which may have unforeseen side effects on your Internet Explorer browser,
and may sometimes block access or printing from library services.
You may try using one of the other browsers above instead if you are having trouble when using Internet Explorer.

Mac(intosh) users please click here. America OnLine (AOL) users please click here.
Those with older versions of Windows before XP (such as 95 or 98) computers or browsers,
or using a browser from MicroSoft Network (MSN), click here first.
Other browsers, cellphone/PDA users click here first.

Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDF Files

For viewing PDF files online or in Electronic Reserves, you will need a PDF reader program such as Get Adobe Reader installed. This is free to download (click on the button)
and a free reader program is also available on the Library Software CD-ROM.

How to Access the Research Databases from Off-Campus

You access the Boreham Library home page, or Research Databases directly, or by going through LionsLink.
(Going through LionsLink is not required for use of the Research Databases.)
A currently valid student number is required for use of the databases from off-campus.

  1. On the screen, enter your number exactly as it appears on your card beginning with the @ symbol.
If you do not have a UA Fort Smith card with the @ number, you will need to get one at the Campus Center to use library and other services on and off campus. In the meantime, use the student number beginning with "20" from your student schedule or other registration paperwork.

  2. Click on the Submit button.

Remember that if you spend a long enough time on the same page, you may be required to logon again. Just repeat the same process above.

Remember - you must be registered THIS SEMESTER and the semester must have ALREADY BEGUN to use these resources!

  5. If the link is to a PDF file (a file name that ends in ".pdf") then you will need a PDF reader program such as Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print it.
This must already be installed on your computer before you try to view the file.
You can click Get Adobe Reader to download one such plugin. There is also one available on the Library Software CD-ROM.

  6. When you click on a link, you may go to the login screen, as shown below.

    • Enter the number exactly as it appears on your UA Fort Smith identification card,
      including the @ symbol.
(In the actual login screen, there will be a box to click in just above the Submit button)

If you do not have a UA Fort Smith card with your @ number, you will need to get one at the Campus Center to use library and other services on and off campus.

    • Click on Submit.

  7. If a popup says "The certificate has expired", click on Yes.

  8. If a popup asks "Do you want to install and run signed applet...", click on Always grant.

Boreham Library CD-ROM

The Library Software CD-ROM is available for checkout by currently registered students at the Library circulation desk.

It contains the versions of the software needed to access the Boreham Library online services. However, you must already have an Internet Service Provider arrangement (for example: Alltel, Cox, AOL, or one of the many other services).

Warning: Many ISPs provide a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer when you sign up. This version may not be fully functional, and may not be able to use all of the library's services. You may download a complete version of this from Microsoft, but this will be a large file and may take more than two hours over a telephone (dial-up) connection. OR - you can use the Firefox browser on the Library Software CD-ROM.

Instructions for installing the software on a Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP system computer with a CD-ROM drive are included in the case or available online by clicking here.

The browser you install may or may not be able to dial your computer's ISP (Internet Service Provider), depending on how your ISP's original software configured your computer. If it can't connect:

  1. Close the browser.

  2. Load the browser your ISP provided and connect to the Internet with it.

  3. Reduce - but do not close - the ISP browser (use the _ instead of the X in the upper right corner of the window) so it moves down to the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Load your new browser.

Your new browser should now be able to use the existing phone connection to access the Internet.

Macintosh Users

The Boreham Library regrets that there is, at present, no way for library staff to test access via Macintosh software. We suggest you try the Mac version of Firefox 2.0.0.1 or later (also remember to get Java for your Mac), and follow the other relevant instructions here.

Using Your Own Computer On Campus

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith does not have open wireless access for the public.

However, student and faculty wireless access to the system while on campus in certain buildings may be obtained through the Computer Help Desk's wireless information page.

To get wireless access, you must:

  • be a currently registered student, faculty or staff member;

  • be assigned a specific address by the Computer Help Desk;

  • have a wireless card properly configured to use the system. The type and brand of wireless card may be discussed with the Help Desk before you purchase it, if you do not yet have one.

Wireless Setup explains the latest information on setting up your own wireless connection.

The Library is not capable of arranging this for you. However, once you have access, you may use your own laptop over the library's wireless network while inside the building.
