Library Software CD-ROM InstructionsThe Library Software CD-ROM may be checked out overnight at the Boreham Library circulation desk, by currently registered students and faculty. It contains tested software that works with the library's online services, as well as other useful software. Library Software CD-ROM Instructions This software is provided for students accessing library services, to avoid downloading the files online. The software is primarily intended for Windows XP or Vista and requires an existing Internet access by phone, DSL, or cable through an Internet Service Provider. |

Create a file folder on your computer's C drive and name it "atest" and then copy everything from the CD into "atest". Then you can remove the CD and install any of these programs from your C:\atest folder. Follow the directions, and take the default setup for each program.
Firefox
You may find this browser works as well or better for you for Library services than Internet Explorer (blue e) If you like, you can import your Favorites from Internet Explorer, Netscape or Mozilla during the installation.
Firefox does NOT prevent you from using Internet Explorer for any other functions. You do NOT have to make Firefox your default browser.
Java YOU ALSO NEED THIS!
If you do not already have Mozilla or Netscape on your computer, you will also need to install Java for Firefox. Click on the program jre-6u2-windows-i586-p-s.exe. This will install Java.
Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (optional)
This is an alternate email which can be used with or without Firefox.
If you prefer to use the UA Fort Smith LionsLink email only, you may not need Thunderbird. However, Thunderbird is compatible with LionsLink (see http://libcat.uafortsmith.edu/screens/helpfirefox.html for more information) Click on Thunderbird Setup 2.0.0.6.exe to install. Microsoft Excel Viewer 2003 (optional) xlviewer.exe
With Excel Viewer 2003, you can open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed. You can also copy data from Excel Viewer 2003 to another program. However, you cannot edit data, save a workbook, or create a new workbook. Click on xlviewer.exe to install.
Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (optional) ppviewer.exe
PowerPoint Viewer 2003 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. However, Information Rights Management (IRM) presentations, running macros, programs, or opening linked or embedded objects, are not supported by this viewer. This viewer also supports opening password-protected Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in the PowerPoint Viewer 2003. Click on ppviewer.exe to install.
Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 (optional) wdviewer.exe
Word Viewer 2003 lets you open Word 2003 documents and documents created with all previous versions of Microsoft Word for Windows® and Microsoft Word for Macintosh. In addition to Word document files (.doc), you can also open files saved in the following formats: .rtf, .txt, .htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, .wpd, Works 6.0 (.wps), Works 7.0 (.wps),and .xml. With Word Viewer 2003, you can view, print, and copy document contents to another program. However, you cannot edit an open document, save a document, or create a new document. Click on wdviewer.exe to install.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Acrobat Reader allows you to read documents in pdf format, often found in Library services and databases.
This is for Windows 98SE/ME:
Click on AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe to install.
This is for Windows XP or Vista:
Click on AdbeRdr810_en_US.exe to install.
Remember: when printing from Adobe Reader, use the printer icon inside the Adobe Reader screen and NOT your browser printer or CTRL-P.
Printkey 2000 ver.5.10 (unsupported) setup.exe
Install this for a useful popup utility to put in your "Start" folder, so it is loaded when you start up your computer. Press the Print Screen key to activate it. Print, or save to a file, all or part of the screen. The newer shareware version is at http://www.warecentral.com/
OpenOffice 2.2.1
OpenOffice is from http://www.openoffice.org
It is a freeware office suite of software which is comparable and compatible with Microsoft Office in many ways. You can save your document /presentation /spreadsheet in Microsoft Office format, and bring it to campus, then open it on a campus computer. It includes:
CALC (spreadsheet similar to Microsoft Excel)
WRITER (word processor similar to Microsoft Word)
IMPRESS (presentation similar to PowerPoint)
DRAW (a graphics/drawing program)
You should be able to use files from most Microsoft Office programs in OpenOffice (up through version 2003/XP, at least), and save them in Microsoft Office formats that can be read by Microsoft Office. Be sure to save in Microsoft Office Suite file formats for converting back and forth between software.
Click on OOo_2.2.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe to install. This is the version for use with Windows. (Mac users may download their own versions from the website listed above.)
The Open Office instructions.txt file has instructions for installation.
Please note: there is no support or help on campus for OpenOffice. You will need to read the Help file in the program, or use the OpenOffice website at http://support.openoffice.org/ for help.
Note: these players are updated so often it is difficult to keep a current version available on CD-ROM. Downloading the latest version may be your best option.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (xpsp1a_en_x86.exe) and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) are provided here with no guarantee that they will install or work on your system. They are provided only due to the large size of the files, which may be difficult for some users to download. Microsoft authentication may be required for installation.
