APC (American Power Corporation) Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit

Last replacement was: 2007 October 8
Prior replacement was: 2002 December 19

The APC is a SU1400NET SmartUPS, 12 volt/17Amphours unit. It takes 2 (two) RBC11 replacement batteries side by side, linked together. Each is about 7.13" by 2.99" by 6.58". Order two at a time and replace both at the same time.
Last vendor was Wise Wholesale Electronics.

The APC has the power cords from the server CPU, the tape drive, and the modem (the little AC adapter box plug) in it, along with the communications cord from the server.

  1. Shut down the system using the telnet instructions as described in the Server Manual.
  2. Unplug the UPS unit.
  3. Disconnect the cords to it. The data cable at the top uses flat screws, not phillips.
  4. Hold the front cover by the indentations on the upper sides, and pull the front towards you and down.
  5. Leave the ribbon cable connected and put the cover on top of the unit. It may help to temporarily tape it in place as it tends to fall off.
  6. Unscrew the inner plate (2 screws, upper right and left) and swing it down out of the way.
  7. Slide the side-by-side batteries out the front as one piece. It may be necessary to use screwdrivers to gently pry them out until they can be grasped and pulled by hand.
  8. Check for leakage inside the unit. This must be cleaned out if minor, or the UPS may need to be replaced if damage is great enough. This is acidic, so be careful to avoid skin contact.
  9. Pry up the black plastic covers over the leads on each end that are stuck to the top of the side-by-side batteries.
  10. Using a Phillips screwdriver, disconnect the copper-tongued device that ties the batteries together at the front.
  11. Disconnect the red and black leads that are connected at the back. Do NOT allow the leads to touch, or the tools that hold one lead to touch the other lead.
  12. Remove the old pair of batteries.
  13. Place the new batteries side by side in the same configuration as the old, with terminal sides together.
  14. Move the device to the new batteries and connect. The battery terminal positions may vary somewhat so adjust the device position so that the device does not extend beyond the back edge of the batteries.
  15. Connect the leads in the front, red lead on the left and black lead on the right.
  16. Reverse the process from here by sliding the batteries back inside, closing and screwing the inner place into place, and replacing the front cover.
  17. Turn on the unit.
  18. Plug in the communications cable from the server, the server power cable, and the tape drive and modem (AC adapter box).
  19. The fan in the server box goes on a separate extension cord.
  20. The APC power cord has its own extension cord, which goes into the surge protector and from there into the wall plug.
  21. The server should start up again when power is restored.
If not, restart the system as described in the Server Manual. Pull the front panel of the server forward and swing it down, by pressing on the upper right and left corners of the panel where indicated. Press the button on the mid right (the "button" appearing thing further right is actually a key slot, not used here). Close the cover.
  22. The server should be back up in a few minutes. Allow at least 5 minutes before attempting to login.
