Zebra TLP2844 Printer Manual

version 2008.2.28.a

Note: minor changes in menus and wording may occur with each upgrade. Just read the menu carefully and select the correct item wherever it is.

Printer Hardware and Software

The Library uses the Zebra TLP2844 printer for serials receiving labels and routing lists. This is a 30 character per line thermal transfer ribbon printer, parallel interface, using rolls of labels, and a ribbon. Because it is thermal transfer, moving ink from the ribbon to the surface, the print should not fade over time as happens with thermal-only printers.

Source vendor: Bayscan.

Software is installed from the CD for the TLP2844.

Windows Printer Installation and Setup

IMPORTANT: this printer driver has a conflict with the Seiko Label Printer driver. Do NOT have the Seiko printer installed on the same computer as the Zebra printer.

The TLP2844 Driver must be installed from the Zebra EPL group (do NOT use the ZPL group driver for a TLP2844-Z printer!) using the standard Windows XP printer installation process, like any other attached printer. The Zebra is not Plug-and-Play. This driver is not digitally signed, but give permission to install it anyway. This should be installed on LPT1 -- the parallel port using a parallel cable. Results using a USB port tend to be much less reliable due to potential conflicts with other USB devices.

Following the installation, check the following settings. These settings may also be used during the installation process.

In the Printers and Faxes function of Windows, right-click on the Zebra TLP2844 and select Properties.

Under the Ports tab, check the box for LPT1: Printer Port.

Loading the Printer

The printer takes labels in rolls. These are available from BayScan.

For Serials labels, which don't have to go outside the building or last as long, we use paper labels and print with a wax ribbon. For book/media labels, we use special spine/pocket labels and print with a resin ribbon.

WARNING: printer parts may be HOT! Avoid touching metal parts!

  • Turn the printer off using the switch at the rear, where the cables go in (the switch is nearest the outside edge). The light around the blue-green button on top should go out.
  • Pull the blue-green catches on both sides forward (towards you) and the upper part should pop loose
  • Rolls go in the curved section, with the labels coming from over the roll out towards the front.
  • The labels come between and under the black hold-downs. Adjust the width of the hold-downs as needed with the blue-green rotary dial on the right.
  • The label edge should be even, and come to the front edge of the printer but not beyond.

Loading the Printer Ribbon

Ribbons are replaced when the printing begins to show signs of being faint or incomplete.

The printer takes Zebra black printer ribbons which are available from a number of sources, including the machine vendor Bayscan. The type of ribbon to be used depends on the type of label.

For Serials labels, which don't have to go outside the building or last as long, we use paper labels and print with a wax ribbon. For book/media labels, we use special spine/pocket labels and print with a resin ribbon.

BE VERY CAREFUL - metal parts may be HOT!

  1. Turn the printer off using the switch at the rear, where the cables go in (the switch is nearest the outside edge). The light around the blue-green button on top should go out.
  2. Pull the blue-green catches on both sides forward (towards you) and the hood (upper part of cover) should pop loose.
  3. Remove the old ribbon. Keep the lower (front) cardboard tube axle.
  4. The ribbon feeds from the rear (upper) axle, from the rear and down behind and under, to come out in front below the front (lower) axle. The notches in the axle should go on the left.
  5. When inserting the axles, the right side prong has a spring, so put it on the right side first, then push the spring over and line it up with the left prong. Be sure to get the notches in the left side into the raised parts of the prong so it can make the axle turn properly.
  6. Put the empty axle on the front (lower) prongs, notches on the left, and then stick the loose end of the label backing to it. Peel off extra labels as needed to eliminate any labels with residual adhesive, damage, etc.
  7. Roll the front (lower) axle up tight (over the top and away from you) and then make sure the notches align with the raised parts of the left prong.
  8. At the rear inside, look for the blue-green hinge holder and push it left, so it unlocks the hood and you can lower it. Do NOT force the hood down - if it doesn't come down easily, push the hinge holder left!
