Searching for UA Fort Smith Programs Materials
in the Boreham Library Catalog
INSTRUCTIONS: Click on the Program's link below to perform a search in the Boreham Library catalog for all the materials coded to date for that program.
IMPORTANT: if there are over 1,000 records in a search, only the first 1,000 will be obtained. For more complete listings, select one of the sub-program groups below the main program below, or you may do a Keyword search or Advanced search instead, and limit by date range, type of material, or other keywords.
Faculty may request that a program group may be subdivided or a new group created through the Technical Services Librarian.
Explanation of the Coding System
This search includes all materials and electronic resources currently listed in the catalog or approved to be offered, with the exception of some electronic books.

Additional areas: Juvenile Fiction and Juvenile NonFiction are available for use by the Education programs, but are not normally assigned a PROGRAM heading. Adult fiction is assigned a PROGRAM only if significant in the current curriculum.
GRANTS do not use the PROGRAM designation as it is not a program; the word stands alone.
This field is also used for several other codes. Please ignore them when searching for programs.
Explanation
Faculty may request that a program group may be subdivided or a new group created through the Technical Services Librarian.
In order to gather all the materials in various formats (books, periodicals, videos, etc.) together under their most relevant program areas, the Library has developed a coding system which is placed in a certain field in library catalog records.
This is being done to facilitate the evaluation of the collection, the listing of materials for accreditation purposes, and the general information of the faculty and staff. It is intended only as an aid, and not a restriction or funding designation.
While the terms are keyword searchable, they are not in the regular subject search, but must be searched using this page.
Please note that this is an on-going project. Electronic books or large groups of other titles, will take some time to have these designations added. Designations may be changed without notice, added or changed upon request, and revised. This is intended for current Programs rather than individual courses or areas of interest.
This allows all the materials for Mathematics, as an example, to be gathered together, even though normally one would have to search under Algebra and Trigonometry and Geometry and all the other possible subjects in that program area. A book on algebra might not have the actual word "mathematics" in the original catalog record to be found with a key word search. This coding system allows materials that might be cataloged in a range of call numbers in the collection, or those which are - due to the limitations of cataloging - in separate places in the collection, to be grouped conveniently. It also permits materials of relevance to more than one program to be listed under multiple programs (as the Bible, for example, might be placed under both English and under Philosophy).
This is NOT intended as an general category listing system. These headings are for materials specifically directed at the program areas: textbooks, handbooks, how to, careers, etc. These materials are those which might be on a list of required titles for accreditation of a program, rather than general information. The only exceptions would be titles which were specifically requested by faculty for use in coursework (for example, an historical novel in History, or a fictional trial novel in Legal).
Materials receive a local subject heading of "PROGRAM: " followed by the specific program name, and followed (if necessary) by a general program area name.
Specific Program Exceptions
Materials relating generally to a specialty are classed only with the regular materials. Materials related to a specialty must be specifically relevant to instruction in that specialty.
ART: this is such a large area that it has been divided by the Library into general categories for convenience.
BUSINESS, SPECIFIC is intended for individual companies and specific industries.
EDUCATION: these specialties are followed by a comma and then the specialty, to distinguish the teaching of a subject from the program materials in general on that subject. Materials related to Music in general are not classed with Education, for example; PROGRAM: EDUCATION, MUSIC is reserved for materials about teaching music.
HEALTH: Materials which may be used for more than one subgroup (such as medical materials being used for nurses, EMTs, and/or paramedics, etc.) may only have the general heading for that group (medical materials not specific to just nursing or EMTs, etc., being under PROGRAM: HEALTH, GENERAL). Materials for lay persons and education of the public are under HEALTH, POPULAR. Materials related to specific cases or specific diseases/conditions are under HEALTH, SPECIFIC.
INTERDISCIPLINARY covers those materials not specific to one discipline. CAREER (INTERDISCIPLINARY) is for any materials which cover jobs, employment, resumes, or seeking education.
JUSTICE: This program group covers Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, and Forensics.
LANGUAGES covers all aspects not specifically under SPANISH, FRENCH, or GERMAN, including sign language and English as a foreign language.
Leadership falls under more than one program, so it is gathered together as an INTERDISCIPLINARY program: PROGRAM: LEADERSHIP (INTERDISCIPLINARY).
LEGAL is for the Legal Assistance/Paralegal program only, for materials specific to actual practical use by paralegals. General laws and history of law is under PROGRAM: POLITICAL (SOCIAL). Law specifically related to business is PROGRAM: LAW (BUSINESS).
LITERATURE is divided into AMERICAN, BRITISH, and WORLD (which may also include American or British as well as that of non-English-speaking countries).
Certain topics with extensive materials and numerous subtopics, such as NURSING, are separated as a program area; only materials covering the specific (for example) type of nurse are classed under that type of nursing. More general nursing materials are covered under NURSING alone, and materials relating to health and medicine in general are under HEALTH.
Some adjustments to program names were made to avoid duplication in keyword searching. For example, PHYSICAL EDUCATION is used for a general heading, while PHYSED is used for Physical Education following specific sports (such as baseball, basketball, etc.)
RHETORIC is used for materials on how to write. Materials specifically related to writing for business may be under PROGRAM: COMMUNICATIONS (BUSINESS).
