Circulation Policies

Checkout Privileges

Library materials may be checked out using:

  • UA Fort Smith identification cards by currently enrolled students, currently employed faculty and staff
  • patrons with Fort Smith or Scott-Sebastian Public Library cards
  • patrons with a current ARKLink card (see Statewide Card) accompanied by photo identification.

Cards may not be used by anyone other than the owner of the card.

Patrons are responsible for notifying the library of any change of address or telephone number, or status at their University.

Loan Periods

Circulating books normally check out for 21 days or to the end of the semester, whichever is less. Selected specially marked circulating books only check out for 7 days.

Circulating audiovisual (Videos, DVDs, cassettes, etc.) normally check out for 7 days or to the end of the semester, whichever is less.

Reference materials and journals do not circulate but may be photocopied.

Materials on Reserve may only be checked out by students and faculty. Materials on Reserve may be non-circulating or checked out for limited periods.

  • Faculty and staff may borrow up to a total of 20 items from the library until the end of the current semester. Audiovisual materials checkout for 7 days or the end of the semester, whichever is less.
Faculty are encouraged to place materials on reserve, rather than borrowing them for extended periods to insure availability.

  • Students may borrow up to a total of 15 items, which may include up to 3 audiovisual items, for the normal loan periods or until the end of the semester, whichever is less.

  • Public library patrons from Fort Smith Public Library or Scott-Sebastian Regional Library may borrow up to a total of 10 items, which may include up to 3 audiovisual items, for the normal loan periods or until the end of the semester, whichever is less. Reserve room items are not available for checkout by this category of users but may be used inside the library.

  • ARKLink users from other colleges are restricted to the use of the general circulating book collection. These items may be checked out for 21 days or until the end of the semester, whichever is less, and may be renewed once. Items borrowed from the Boreham Library with an ARKLink card must be returned to the Boreham Library.

Returning Books

Books that are checked out from Boreham Library may be returned to several locations. Books may be left at the circulation desk or put in one of three book drops: in the circulation counter on the west end, at the front door, or in the book drop box at the back door accessible by the driveway. The front door drop and the box at the rear are available at all times.

Renewals

Circulating books may be renewed once, unless another patron requested the book. You must renew the books before the due date. Renewals may be made through the online catalog by calling up the patron's personal Library record and indicating which item(s) should be renewed. Reload the record to verify the new due date. Materials can also be renewed by telephone by calling the main library number, (479) 788-7200.

Placing Holds/Recalls

If an item is checked out to another user, a request may be made at the Circulation Desk to hold the item when it is returned. A valid ID is required. Notice will be sent made by phone or email when the item is returned. The item(s) will be held at the Circulation Desk for 3 days. If the material is not picked up by the third day, it will be returned to circulation.

Missing Books

If the online catalog shows that an item has not been checked out but the item cannot be located, the circulation desk staff should be asked to do a search for it. After the item has been located, notice will be sent by phone or email. Materials will be held at the Circulation Desk for 3 days. If not picked up, the materials will be returned to general use.

Overdues

The Boreham Library rarely purchases more than one copy of most titles. Prompt return of materials within the loan period is vital to library services and to keep patrons in good standing with the Library and the University.

Overdue letters are sent as courtesy reminders. Three overdue notices are sent followed by a bill. Failure to receive the written reminders is not a valid reason to excuse overdue service charges. It is the patron's responsibility to keep the Library updated on phone numbers and mailing addresses.

Patrons with overdue materials or fines will not be able to register for classes, access grades or library databases, or obtain transcripts until the obligations are settled at the library. ARKLink privileges will be blocked at other libraries. Use of UA Fort Smith cards at public libraries will be blocked.

Fines/Lost Books

Fines on books accumulate at 10 cents per day. Overdue audiovisual and reserve items are fined at 25 cents per day. The total amount of fines will not exceed the cost of the book. For books not returned, there will be a replacement cost plus a $10 nonrefundable processing fee for each item not returned.

Damaged Books/Materials

The cardholder is responsible for all materials checked out on that card and should examine materials before checking them out. Missing parts or damages must be reported to the library staff. Materials which are returned damaged or missing parts will be assessed a charge based on the cost of repair or replacement. Charges will vary and payment remains the responsibility of the cardholder. Failure to pay charges may result in being blocked from library and University services, including ARKLink card privileges at other institutions.

Locations of Stacks

The circulating nonfiction collection is housed on the 1st floor on the east side of the library. Circulating adult fiction, juvenile fiction and nonfiction as well as audiovisual materials are on the second floor east on the north end of that row of shelves. The reference books are also on the second floor, east. Periodicals are on the 2nd floor on the south side.

Placing Items on Reserve

Reserve materials are those which require a more limited circulation than they would normally have, or materials specially provided for student use. Instructions are available here.

Additional Information

By state law, patron circulation records are confidential unless being used to collect overdue materials or fines, except by due process of law, or by provisions of the PATRIOT Act.
